About Me

Hi, I’m Nicky.
I started this website because I felt like life was moving too fast. I wanted to find a way to slow down. I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but at some point I realised I was rushing through whole seasons without really noticing them. One day it was January, and then somehow it was June, and I couldn’t tell you what had changed in between. I was looking forward to the Christmas season, and then it was all over before I had the chance to appreciate it.
So I decided to try to slow down and pay more attention.
This website grew out of that decision. It’s a place to mark the passing of the year. Not in a complicated way, but in small, everyday things. The first snowdrops. A hearty soup on a cold night. A book that fits the time of year. The way the light changes from one month to the next.
I’m not an expert in nature, or cooking, or anything else, really. I’m just someone who is genuinely curious about the world. Someone is trying to notice more. I get things wrong. I try recipes that don’t work out. I misidentify birds. But getting things right isn’t the point; it’s doing them, it’s being aware. But I find that paying attention makes my life feel a little richer and more grounded.
I believe that people in the world today are looking for connection. Real connection, with other real people, over the things that actually matter to them. Not perfectly curated lives, but honest ones. A recipe someone’s grandmother used to make. A walk that someone takes every year when the bluebells come out. A book that got someone through a hard winter.
That’s what this website is for.
So whether you’re here to find ideas, share your own, or simply feel like you are a part of it and more aware of the turning of the year. You’re very welcome here. Pull up a chair and let us know what you’ve been noticing.
