So you want to look up at the night sky this April? Same here. I’ve been reading up on what’s happening overhead this month. There’s actually quite a lot going on. And the best part? You don’t need fancy equipment to enjoy most of it.
Let me walk you through what I’ve learned and share some tips I’ve picked up along the way.

The Pink Moon Kicks Things Off
April starts with a bang. The Full Pink Moon arrives on April 1st (no, that’s not an April Fools’ joke). Peak illumination happens around 10:12 p.m. EDT for those in the US.
Here’s something I didn’t know until recently. The Pink Moon isn’t actually pink. I was a bit disappointed when I found that out. The name comes from pink wildflowers called moss phlox. These little ground-cover flowers bloom across North America in early spring. So it’s really about what’s happening on the ground, not up above.
Different cultures have given this moon all sorts of names. The Lakota called it the Moon When the Ducks Come Back. The Algonquin called it the Breaking Ice Moon. I quite like those names. They paint such a clear picture of the season changing.
This full moon also has religious significance. It’s the Paschal Moon, which determines when Easter falls. In 2026, Easter lands on April 5th. Pretty handy timing if you’re planning a holiday gathering.
For the best view, find an open area and watch the moon rise above the horizon. It’ll look larger and more golden at that moment. That’s thanks to something called the moon illusion. Your brain plays tricks on you in the nicest way.

Mercury Makes a Morning Appearance
Early risers get a treat this month. Mercury reaches its greatest western elongation on April 3rd. That’s astronomer-speak for when Mercury appears furthest from the sun in the morning sky.
I’ll be honest. I’ve never actually spotted Mercury myself. It’s tricky because it hugs the horizon. But apparently, this is one of the best times of the year to try. Look low in the eastern sky just before sunrise. You’ll need a clear view of the horizon with no trees or buildings in the way.
What I’ve read is that Mercury looks like a bright yellowish star. It won’t twinkle as much as actual stars do. Planets appear steadier because they’re closer to us.
If you’re keen to try, give yourself about 15 to 20 minutes before sunrise. And maybe bring a hot drink. Those early mornings can be chilly.

A Mini Planetary Gathering
Around mid-April, something interesting happens low on the eastern horizon before dawn. Mercury, Mars, and Saturn cluster together from roughly April 15th to 22nd.
Now I should warn you. This one is challenging. You’ll need binoculars, a very clear horizon, and good timing. The window is only about 15-20 minutes before sunrise. But if you manage to catch it, you can track how the arrangement changes each morning.
On April 20th, Mercury and Saturn pass within half a degree of each other. That’s really close in sky terms. The same day, Mercury and Mars also get cosy.
I’m planning to attempt this one. Even if I miss the planets, at least I’ll catch a nice sunrise.

The Lyrid Meteor Shower
This is the event I’m most excited about. The Lyrid meteor shower peaks on the night of April 22nd into the morning of the 23rd.
The Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers. Chinese astronomers were watching them back in 687 BC. That’s over 2,700 years of people looking up at the same shower. I find that kind of connection to history pretty amazing.
You can expect to see around 10 to 20 meteors per hour under good conditions. Sometimes the Lyrids surprise everyone with outbursts of up to 100 meteors per hour. Those are rare, though. The next predicted outburst isn’t until 2042.
Here’s the good news for 2026. The moon will be a waxing crescent, setting after midnight. So the sky should be nice and dark during peak viewing hours.
The meteors come from debris left behind by Comet Thatcher. This comet won’t swing by Earth again until 2278. But its trail of dust and ice particles keeps the Lyrids going every April.
For the best experience, head outside after midnight. Find a dark location away from city lights. Lie back on a blanket and let your eyes adjust for at least 20 minutes. Don’t stare at your phone. The screen brightness will ruin your night vision.
Look towards the constellation Lyra in the northeast. But don’t focus too hard on one spot. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. The Lyrids are known for leaving glowing dust trails that linger for a few seconds. Pretty spectacular when you catch one.

The Da Vinci Glow
Here’s something I only recently learned about. It’s called Earthshine or the Da Vinci Glow. And April is one of the best months to see it.
When there’s a thin crescent moon, look carefully at the dark part of the lunar surface. You might notice a faint ghostly glow. That’s actually Earth’s light being reflected onto the moon.
Leonardo da Vinci was the first person to correctly explain this phenomenon. He thought it was Earth’s oceans reflecting sunlight. Later scientists found it’s actually mostly clouds doing the reflecting. Still, the name stuck.
The best time to spot the Da Vinci Glow is a few days before and after the new moon on April 17th. So around April 14th to 16th in the mornings, or April 18th to 20th in the evenings. Look low on the horizon about an hour after sunset or before sunrise.
Scientists have found that Earthshine is about 10% brighter in April and May compared to other months. Nobody is entirely sure why. But it’s something to do with Earth’s position relative to the sun.
You don’t need any equipment for this one. In fact, it’s best seen with just your eyes. Binoculars can actually make it harder to appreciate.

Finding Dark Skies
I keep mentioning dark locations. But what does that actually mean? And where do you find them?
Light pollution is a real problem for stargazers. About 80% of the world’s population lives under light-polluted skies. If you live in a city, you might only see a handful of stars on any given night.
The good news is that you don’t need to travel to the middle of nowhere. Even getting 20 to 30 miles from a city can make a huge difference.
There are some handy tools online. The Dark Site Finder shows light pollution levels worldwide. It uses colour coding to show you where the darkest skies are. Blue and black areas are the best. Yellow and orange are okay. Red means you’re fighting against a lot of artificial light.
For the best stargazing, look for locations rated Bortle 4 or darker. The Bortle scale runs from 1 to 9. Class 1 is perfect pristine darkness. Class 9 is a heavily light-polluted city centre.
Many national parks and state parks offer excellent dark skies. In the US, places like Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah and Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania are famous for stargazing. The UK has several Dark Sky Reserves too, including Northumberland and Exmoor.
If you can’t travel, try these tricks. Position yourself so that any light sources are behind you. That way, you’re looking at the darkest part of the sky. Even your backyard can work if you block out nearby streetlights.

What Else to Spot This Month
Beyond the big events, there’s plenty to look at on any clear April night.
Jupiter is still visible in the evening sky, though it’s getting lower each week. Look for it in the west after sunset near the constellation Gemini. Through binoculars, you might spot its four largest moons lined up like tiny dots beside it.
The spring constellations are on display now, too. Leo the Lion dominates the southern sky. Look for the distinctive sickle shape that forms his head and mane. The sickle looks like a backwards question mark. Once you spot it, you’ll never miss it again.
Below Leo, the water snake Hydra stretches across a huge section of sky. It’s the largest constellation of all. Despite its size, it has only one bright star, Alphard. That name means “the solitary one” in Arabic. Rather poetic for a lone star in such a vast constellation.
If you have binoculars, try spotting the Beehive Cluster in Cancer. It’s a fuzzy patch of light about 600 light-years away. That fuzz is actually dozens of stars clustered together. Ancient observers thought it looked like bees swarming around a hive.
On April 25th, the moon will occult Regulus for viewers in the eastern US. That means the moon will pass directly in front of the star, blocking it from view. It’s a quick event, but rather special to witness.

Practical Tips I’ve Gathered
Let me share some things I wish someone had told me earlier.
First, give your eyes time to adjust. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes for your night vision to fully kick in. If you check your phone or look at car headlights, you’ll reset the clock. Some people use red-light torches because red light has less effect on night vision.
Second, dress warmer than you think you need to. Standing or lying still in the dark gets cold fast. Even in April. Layers are your friend.
Third, binoculars are often better than telescopes for beginners. They’re easier to use, cheaper, and let you see a wider area of sky. A good pair of 10×50 binoculars will show you plenty.
Fourth, download a stargazing app like Sky Tonight or Star Walk. You can hold your phone up to the sky, and it’ll label what you’re looking at. Just remember to use the night mode so you don’t wreck your dark adaptation.
Finally, patience matters. The best stargazing experiences come from settling in and simply watching for a while. The sky rewards those who take their time.

Looking Ahead
April is just the beginning. There’s a lot more coming this year. August brings a total solar eclipse visible from Iceland, Greenland, and Spain. The Perseid meteor shower in August will have perfect dark-sky conditions because of a new moon.
But that’s months away. For now, I’m focusing on April. I’ve got my eye on the Lyrids, especially. There’s something wonderfully simple about lying on a blanket, looking up, and waiting to see a piece of ancient comet burn up in our atmosphere.
Maybe I’ll catch a few shooting stars. Maybe I’ll finally spot elusive Mercury. Either way, I’ll be outside looking up. And honestly, that’s the whole point.
If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, things look a bit different. The Lyrids are still visible but at lower rates. The radiant point sits lower in your sky. Still, some meteors do streak southward. It’s worth a look if you’re keen.
April is also Global Astronomy Month, which feels fitting. Astronomy clubs often host special events and star parties this time of year. Check if there’s one near you. Watching with experienced observers can teach you so much. They often bring impressive telescopes, too.
