Looking Up: Your Guide to the July Night Sky

I’ll be honest with you. I’m not an astronomer. I’m just someone who loves stepping outside on warm summer evenings and staring upward. There’s something about July nights that feels particularly magical. The air is warm. The days are long. And when darkness finally arrives, the sky puts on quite a show.

So I’ve been doing some research. I wanted to know what’s actually happening up there this month. And I thought you might like to know too.

Why July is a Great Month for Stargazing

July brings unique opportunities for skywatchers. The warm weather means you can stay outside for hours without freezing. That’s a big deal when you’re trying to spot meteors or wait for planets to rise.

However, there’s a small catch. Summer nights are shorter than winter ones. True darkness doesn’t arrive until quite late in the evening. But once it does, the sky rewards your patience.

One thing I’ve learned is that timing matters. The Old Farmer’s Almanac recommends planning your viewing around the moon phases. A bright full moon washes out fainter stars. So the days around the new moon (July 24th this year) offer the darkest skies.

The Milky Way becomes visible in July, too. That glowing band of stars stretches right overhead on clear nights. You’ll need a dark location away from city lights to see it properly. But when you do, it’s unforgettable.

The Buck Moon: July’s Full Moon

Every full moon has a name. July’s is called the Buck Moon. I find this name quite charming. It comes from Native American traditions and marks the time when male deer begin growing their new antlers.

The full moon arrives on July 10th this year. It peaks at 4:37 PM Eastern Time in the USA. Since that’s during daylight hours, look for it rising in the southeast after sunset instead.

According to Time and Date, the Buck Moon has other names, too. Some cultures call it the Thunder Moon because of July’s frequent storms. Celtic traditions named it the Hay Moon or Mead Moon. The Tlingit people of Alaska call it the Salmon Moon.

Here’s something interesting. Deer antlers can grow up to one and a half inches per week during summer. That’s apparently the fastest-growing bone in the animal kingdom. Nature is wild.

The Summer Triangle: Your Night Sky Anchor

If you only learn one thing about the July sky, learn the Summer Triangle. This pattern of three bright stars will become your best friend for navigating overhead.

The Summer Triangle isn’t technically a constellation. It’s what astronomers call an asterism. That’s just a fancy word for a recognisable star pattern that crosses constellation boundaries.

Three stars form the triangle. Vega is the brightest. It sits almost directly overhead on July evenings. Deneb marks another corner. And Altair completes the shape. All three are bright enough to see even from light-polluted cities.

NASA’s Night Sky Network offers some great tips for exploring this region. The Milky Way runs right through the middle of the Summer Triangle. So once you’ve found these three stars, you’ve also found our galaxy’s bright band.

Here’s my tip for finding it. Look east after sunset. Find the brightest star you can see. That’s probably Vega. Then look down and to the right for Altair. Deneb sits to the left. Connect them mentally, and you’ve got your triangle.

Shooting Stars: The Delta Aquariids

July brings the first major meteor shower of summer. The Southern Delta Aquariids peak on the night of July 28th into the early morning of the 29th.

Don’t expect a spectacular show, though. This shower produces around 20 meteors per hour at best. That’s modest compared to August’s famous Perseids. But it’s still worth watching.

The Royal Museums Greenwich notes that conditions look good this year. The crescent moon sets early, leaving dark skies for meteor watching. The radiant point (where meteors seem to originate) is in Aquarius. But meteors can appear anywhere in the sky.

Speaking of the Perseids, they actually begin in July, too. The shower runs from July 17th through August. So you might catch some early Perseid meteors mixed in with the Delta Aquariids. The Perseids are caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, discovered way back in 1862.

Planets on Parade

Planet spotting in July requires some effort. The evening sky is fairly quiet in terms of bright planets. Mars lingers low in the west after sunset but fades quickly. Mercury makes a brief appearance early in the month.

Morning skies tell a different story. Venus blazes brightly in the east before sunrise. It’s unmistakable. Saturn rises around 11 PM and climbs higher as the month progresses. Jupiter returns to view mid-month, appearing low in the northeast before dawn.

Sea and Sky’s astronomy calendar mentions that Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation on July 4th. That’s astronomy-speak for being as far from the sun as it gets in our sky. It’s one of the best times to spot this elusive little planet. Look low in the west just after sunset.

Something remarkable happens between Saturn and Neptune this month. They’re incredibly close together. Less than a degree separates them for much of July. You’ll need a telescope to see Neptune. But finding Saturn first makes locating Neptune much easier.

The International Space Station

The ISS might be my favourite thing to spot. It doesn’t require any equipment. It’s bright, fast, and utterly awe-inspiring when you remember there are actual people living up there.

July is particularly good for ISS viewing. According to Sky & Telescope, early July brings multiple passes per night for observers in the Northern Hemisphere. You might see it four or five times in a single evening during this period.

The station appears as a bright, steady light moving smoothly across the sky. It doesn’t flash or blink as aircraft do. It takes about six to ten minutes to cross from horizon to horizon. And it’s travelling at 17,500 miles per hour.

Use NASA’s Spot the Station tool to find passes for your location. You can sign up for alerts, too. The app tells you exactly when to look and in which direction. It’s simple and reliable.

Tips for Better Stargazing

I’m still learning. But here are some things I’ve picked up along the way.

Give your eyes time to adjust. This is called dark adaptation. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to darkness. Every time you look at your phone or a bright light, you reset the process. So put the phone away. Or use an app with a red light mode.

Get comfortable. Stargazing involves a lot of looking up. Bring a blanket or reclining chair. Your neck will thank you. A gravity chair works wonderfully for this.

Check the weather. Clouds ruin everything. Most weather apps show forecasts of cloud cover. Some apps like Clear Outside are designed specifically for astronomers.

Find dark skies if you can. Light pollution is the enemy of stargazing. Websites like Dark Site Finder show light pollution maps. Even moving a few miles from a city helps enormously.

Use apps to identify what you see. Stellarium is free and excellent. Point your phone at the sky, and it labels everything. Sky Tonight is another good option.

Don’t Forget Binoculars

You don’t need a telescope to enjoy astronomy. Binoculars are brilliant for beginners. A basic 7×50 or 10×50 pair reveals far more than your naked eye can see.

Point binoculars at the moon, and you’ll see craters in stunning detail. Sweep them along the Milky Wa,y and countless stars appear. Jupiter’s moons become visible. Star clusters pop into view.

The Planetary Society calls binoculars a great first step before committing to a telescope. I agree completely. They’re portable, affordable, and versatile.

What I’m Most Excited About

Personally, I’m looking forward to the new moon period around July 24th. That’s when I’ll head out into the dark and try to photograph the Milky Way. The Delta Aquariids peak just a few days later. So there’s potential for a nice combination of dark skies and shooting stars.

I’m also curious about Saturn and Neptune being so close together. I’ve never consciously looked at Neptune before. This seems like a good opportunity to finally spot it.

Final Thoughts

The July night sky offers something for everyone. You don’t need expensive equipment or expertise. You just need curiosity and a willingness to look up.

Start with the Summer Triangle. Learn to find those three bright stars. Then gradually expand your knowledge outward. Notice the moon’s phases. Watch for meteors. Track down a planet or two.

The universe has been putting on this show for billions of years. We’re lucky enough to witness it. All we have to do is step outside and pay attention.
