What’s Happening in the June Night Sky?

June is easily one of my favourite months for looking up. The evenings are warm. You can sit outside comfortably for hours. And this year, June delivers what might be the most beautiful planetary event of 2026.
I’ve been digging into what’s happening overhead this month. There’s a lot to get excited about. Let me share what I’ve found.

Venus and Jupiter Put on a Show
The headline event happens on June 8th and 9th. Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest planets in our sky, will appear almost side by side. They’ll be so close that from Earth, they’ll look like a dazzling double star.
At their closest, the planets will be only about 1.5 degrees apart. That’s roughly the width of your thumb held at arm’s length. You could hide both planets behind it.
NASA describes this as needing nothing more than your eyes to enjoy. No telescope required. Just head outside about 45 minutes after sunset and look toward the west-northwest. You genuinely cannot miss them.
Here’s something I find fascinating. Even though they appear almost touching in our sky, Venus and Jupiter are nowhere near each other in space. Venus sits about 111 million miles from Earth. Jupiter is more than five times farther away. We’re seeing a cosmic optical illusion created by their orbital positions.
Venus will be the brighter of the pair, shining at around magnitude -4.0. Jupiter will be slightly dimmer at about magnitude -1.9. Both are bright enough to punch through twilight and even light pollution. City dwellers should have no trouble spotting them.
The days before and after June 9th are also excellent for viewing. The conjunction builds over several days. On June 7th, the planets are nearly side by side. On the 8th and 9th, they appear to swap positions. Then they slowly drift apart again.
But wait, there’s more. On June 16th and 17th, a thin crescent moon joins the scene. It’ll glide past both planets, creating a beautiful three-way arrangement low in the western sky after sunset. Mercury will also be visible nearby, though you’ll need a clear horizon to spot it.
This kind of planetary meetup doesn’t happen often. The next Venus-Jupiter conjunction won’t be easily visible until at least 2028. So make the most of this one.

Mercury Makes an Evening Appearance
Speaking of Mercury, June offers one of the best chances all year to spot this elusive planet.
Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation on June 15th. That’s when it appears at its maximum distance from the sun in our sky. It’ll be visible in the evening, low on the western horizon after sunset.
I’ll be honest. I’ve always found Mercury tricky to observe. It never strays far from the sun’s glare. You need a clear horizon and good timing. But this month provides a decent opportunity.
Look for Mercury about 30 minutes after sunset, low in the west-northwest. It’ll appear as a moderately bright point of light, fainter than Venus or Jupiter but still visible to the naked eye. The twin stars Castor and Pollux from the constellation Gemini will be nearby for reference.
On June 16th, a very thin crescent moon will appear close to Mercury. This could help you locate the planet since the moon is much easier to spot. Just look slightly below and to the right of the lunar crescent.
Mercury is only visible for a few weeks around greatest elongation before it sinks back toward the horizon. By late June, it’ll be lost in the twilight again. So mid-June is your window.

The Summer Solstice Arrives
June 21st marks the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This is the longest day and shortest night of the year.
The sun will be at its highest point in the sky. In the UK and northern Europe, daylight can stretch to 16 hours or more. Further north, the sky never fully darkens. That’s why this time is sometimes called the midnight sun in places like Scandinavia and Alaska.
For stargazers, the solstice brings mixed feelings. More daylight means less darkness for observing. True night doesn’t arrive until quite late in northern latitudes. But there’s still plenty to see if you’re willing to stay up.
One positive: the summer Milky Way is now well-placed in the sky. Around midnight, the galactic centre rises in the southeast. If you’re somewhere with dark skies, you can see the dense star clouds of Sagittarius arching overhead.
The solstice also marks the beginning of prime season for noctilucent clouds. These are rare, high-altitude ice clouds that glow after sunset. They form about 50 miles up in the mesosphere, far higher than normal clouds. When the sun drops below the horizon, its light still catches these clouds, making them shimmer with a bluish or silvery glow.
Noctilucent clouds are visible mainly from latitudes between 50 and 70 degrees north during the weeks around the solstice. Look toward the northern horizon about 1 to 2 hours after sunset. If you see wispy, glowing blue-white streaks, you might be witnessing this beautiful phenomenon.

The Strawberry Moon Closes in June
The full moon arrives on June 29th, with peak illumination at 7:56 p.m. Eastern Time. This is the Strawberry Moon, named for the strawberry harvest season in North America.
I love these traditional moon names. They connect us to rhythms that people followed for centuries. The Algonquin tribes named this moon after the time when wild strawberries ripened. It had nothing to do with the moon’s colour, despite the evocative imagery.
In Europe, this moon was sometimes called the Honey Moon or Mead Moon. Some historians think this is where the word “honeymoon” originated. June was traditionally a popular month for weddings, and newlyweds would drink mead during their first month of marriage.
The June full moon is the first of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Because of the sun’s high position, this moon stays relatively low on the horizon. That low angle can give it a golden or amber tint, especially when rising or setting.
This year’s Strawberry Moon will appear in the constellation Sagittarius, near the teapot asterism that marks the archer’s bow. The moon will be close to the red supergiant star Antares in the days before and after full phase.
For observers in parts of South America and Antarctica, the moon will briefly cover Antares in what’s called an occultation. The rest of us can enjoy seeing them close together in the sky.

Summer Constellations Take Centre Stage
June brings the summer constellations into prime viewing position. If you head outside after midnight, you’ll see a completely different sky than what was visible in winter.
The Summer Triangle dominates overhead. This isn’t a constellation itself but an asterism made of three bright stars from three different constellations. Vega in Lyra, Deneb in Cygnus, and Altair in Aquila form the triangle’s corners.
Vega is the brightest of the three. It’s a blue-white star and one of the closest bright stars to our solar system at just 25 light-years away. Ancient observers used Vega as a standard for measuring star brightness.
Deneb marks the tail of Cygnus the Swan. The swan’s body stretches across the Milky Way. Through binoculars, the region around Deneb reveals beautiful star fields and nebulae.
Altair sits at the southern point of the triangle in Aquila, the Eagle. It’s one of the closest stars visible to the naked eye at about 17 light-years distant. Altair spins so fast that it bulges noticeably at its equator.
Lower in the south, Scorpius the Scorpion curves along the horizon. Its brightest star, Antares, glows red. The name means “rival of Mars” because its colour resembles the red planet. Antares is a red supergiant, one of the largest stars visible to the naked eye.
Just east of Scorpius sits Sagittarius, often called the Teapot because of its distinctive shape. The centre of our galaxy lies in this direction. If you’re in a dark location, you’ll notice the Milky Way is especially bright and dense here.

The New Moon Window
For deep sky observers, the new moon on June 15th provides the month’s darkest skies. This is the best time to hunt for galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.
The week around the new moon is ideal for observing the Milky Way. From a dark site, you can trace its path from Cassiopeia in the north, through Cygnus and Aquila, and down to Sagittarius in the south.
June’s short nights in the Northern Hemisphere mean you need to stay up late for proper darkness. Astronomical twilight doesn’t end until nearly midnight at many latitudes. But if you’re willing to wait, the views are worth it.
The galactic centre in Sagittarius contains countless deep sky objects. The Lagoon Nebula and Trifid Nebula are visible through binoculars. Star clusters like M6 and M7 are easy targets. A small telescope reveals even more treasures.
If you can’t get to a dark sky site, even suburban locations offer decent views of the brighter targets. The Andromeda Galaxy is rising in the east before dawn by late June. Globular clusters like M13 in Hercules are visible from most locations.

Practical Tips for June Stargazing
June presents some unique challenges and opportunities. Here are tips I’ve gathered for making the most of it.
First, timing matters more than ever. True darkness comes late. In the northern US and UK, you’ll need to wait until 10:30 p.m. or later for properly dark skies. Plan your sessions accordingly.
Second, mosquitoes and other insects are at peak activity. Bug spray is essential unless you want to spend your observing session scratching. Some stargazers swear by mosquito coils or citronella candles.
Third, the evenings are perfect for planetary observing. Venus and Jupiter don’t require dark skies. You can spot them in twilight, making early evening sessions productive even before full darkness arrives.
Fourth, watch for noctilucent clouds. The weeks around the solstice are prime viewing time. Look north about 90 minutes after sunset for glowing, wispy, blue-white clouds. They’re stunning if you catch them.
Fifth, embrace the short nights. Yes, darkness is brief. But the mild weather makes spending time outside genuinely pleasant. Grab a blanket, lie back, and just watch. Sometimes the best stargazing is simply being present under the sky.

Looking Ahead
June sets the stage for exciting things later in the summer. August brings the year’s big event: a total solar eclipse visible from Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. It also features the Perseid meteor shower under perfect new moon conditions.
But for now, focus on June. The Venus-Jupiter conjunction is the can’t-miss highlight. I’m genuinely excited for it. Two worlds, both shining brilliantly, appear to almost touch in our sky. It’s the kind of sight that reminds you why looking up matters.
The universe keeps performing. All we have to do is step outside and watch.

Finding Dark Skies in Summer
One challenge of June stargazing is finding truly dark skies. Light pollution affects more of us than ever. And with the short nights, every bit of darkness counts.
Dark sky parks and reserves offer the best conditions. In the US, places like Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania and Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah provide exceptional views. The UK has designated dark sky areas in Northumberland, Exmoor, and the Brecon Beacons.
If you can’t travel far, even getting 20 miles outside a city helps considerably. Light domes from urban areas can be visible for many miles. But even as you turn your gaze away from those domes, a darker sky still reveals itself.
Apps like Dark Site Finder and Light Pollution Map can help identify nearby dark locations. They use satellite data to show light pollution levels on a colour-coded map. Blue and green zones offer the best conditions.
Even from your backyard, there’s plenty to see in June. The planets are easy targets regardless of light pollution. The moon is always impressive. And the brighter stars of the Summer Triangle punch through suburban glow without trouble.
