What’s Happening in the May Night Sky?

May is shaping up to be a fantastic month for looking up. The evenings are getting warmer in the Northern Hemisphere. The nights are still reasonably long. And there’s a surprising amount happening overhead.

I’ve been doing some digging into what’s worth watching this month. Spoiler alert: we get not one but two full moons. Let me walk you through everything I’ve found.

The Flower Moon Opens the Month

May starts with a full moon on the 1st. Peak illumination hits around 1:23 p.m. EDT. This is the Flower Moon, named for all the blooms bursting open across North America right now.

I love that these traditional moon names connect us to the seasons. Native American tribes gave moons names based on what was happening in nature. May’s moon celebrates spring being in full swing. The flowers are everywhere. The world feels alive again.

Other names for this moon include the Corn Planting Moon and the Milk Moon. Both speak to agricultural traditions. May was the time to get crops in the ground. It was also when livestock were producing plenty of milk.

To see the Flower Moon at its most impressive, catch it right as it rises in the east around sunset. The moon illusion will make it appear larger than usual. And if the atmosphere has any dust or moisture, you might see a gorgeous golden or orange tint.

One thing I didn’t know until recently: this full moon appears in the constellation Scorpius, near the red supergiant star Antares. If you have a clear view of the southeastern sky, you can spot them together. Antares has a distinctly reddish hue. It’s pretty striking next to the bright silver moon.

Halley’s Comet Brings the Eta Aquariids

Even though Halley’s Comet won’t return until 2061, we get to see its debris every May. The Eta Aquariid meteor shower peaks on the morning of May 5th and 6th.

This shower is created by tiny particles of ice and dust left behind as Halley orbits the sun. When Earth passes through this trail, those particles burn up in our atmosphere. The result is streaking meteors.

Now, I should be honest about the viewing conditions this year. The moon will be about 84% full during the peak. That’s going to wash out many of the fainter meteors. So the conditions aren’t ideal.

But here’s the thing. The Eta Aquariids are fast. They enter our atmosphere at around 40 miles per second. Many leave glowing trails that linger for several seconds. Even with moonlight interference, you might catch some of the brighter ones.

The shower favours the Southern Hemisphere. If you’re in Australia, New Zealand, or South America, you’re in luck. You could see up to 50 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, rates are lower. Expect maybe 10 to 30 per hour. The radiant point sits low in the eastern sky before dawn. That’s when Aquarius the Water Bearer rises. You don’t need to stare directly at Aquarius, though. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky.

Try positioning yourself so the moon is blocked by a tree or building. That’ll help preserve your night vision. Head out after 2 a.m. local time for the best show. And give yourself at least 30 minutes of patient watching.

The good news is this shower has a broad peak. You can try watching on May 4th, 5th, or 6th. The mornings after the official peak might actually be better since the moon rises later each night.

Spotting an Asteroid With Your Eyes

Here’s something I find genuinely exciting. In early May, the asteroid Vesta reaches opposition. That means it’s directly opposite the sun from Earth’s perspective. And it’s at its brightest and closest for the year.

Vesta is the second-largest object in the asteroid belt. It’s about 525 kilometres across. That’s roughly the size of Arizona. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft visited it back in 2011 and found it has a fascinating layered interior like a miniature planet.

At opposition on May 2nd, Vesta shines at around magnitude 5.7. That’s right on the edge of naked-eye visibility. You’ll need very dark skies and well-adapted eyes to spot it without binoculars. But with a simple pair of binoculars, it becomes an easy target.

Look for Vesta in the constellation Libra during early May. It’ll look just like another star. The trick is knowing exactly where to look. A stargazing app like Sky Tonight or Stellarium can point you right at it.

What fascinates me is the idea of seeing an asteroid with my own eyes. Most people think of asteroids as invisible specks. But here’s one you can actually watch moving against the background stars if you observe it over several nights.

Vesta has an unusually bright surface made of basaltic rock. This reflectiveness is why it outshines all other asteroids. Scientists think its ancient magnetic field protected the surface from darkening over the course of billions of years.

The Planetary Society lists Vesta’s opposition as one of the key space events of 2026.

A Moon, Venus, and Jupiter Dance

On the evening of May 19th, something beautiful happens. A thin crescent moon will appear to glide between Venus and Jupiter in the evening sky.

Venus will be low on the western horizon after sunset. Jupiter sits higher up in the constellation Gemini. The slender crescent moon passes between them, creating a lovely three-way meetup.

You don’t need any equipment for this one. Just find a spot with a clear view of the western sky. Look shortly after sunset when the sky is still transitioning from blue to dark. The three objects will be bright enough to punch through the twilight.

I always find these planetary alignments moving. We’re watching worlds that are millions of miles apart appear close together from our vantage point. It’s a reminder of just how much is happening out there in our solar system.

In the days before and after May 19th, the moon will appear near each planet individually. On May 18th, it’s close to Venus. On May 20th, it’s near Jupiter. So you have several evenings to catch something nice.

As a bonus, Jupiter will be hanging near the twin stars Castor and Pollux in Gemini. Through binoculars, you might spot Jupiter’s four largest moons lined up beside it like tiny dots.

The Blue Moon Closes the Month

Here’s the headline event. On May 31st, we get a Blue Moon. That’s the second full moon in a single calendar month.

This happens because the time between full moons is about 29.5 days. May has 31 days. So when a full moon lands on May 1st, there’s just enough time for another before the month ends.

Blue Moons occur roughly every two and a half years. So while they’re not exactly rare, they’re special enough to earn the phrase “once in a Blue Moon.”

The name is a bit misleading, though. The moon won’t actually look blue. It’ll appear its normal silvery white. Very occasionally, particles from volcanic eruptions or wildfires can scatter light, tinting the moon blue. But that’s unrelated to the Blue Moon name.

There’s an interesting bit of history here. The term “Blue Moon” has been around for centuries. But the modern definition only became popular after a 1946 Sky & Telescope article used it. That article actually misinterpreted an older definition. The error stuck and became the standard meaning we use today.

This particular Blue Moon is also the smallest full moon of 2026. That makes it a Micromoon. The moon will be near apogee, its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. So it’ll appear about 5% smaller than an average full moon. Honestly, though, you probably won’t notice the size difference unless you compare photos.

The Blue Moon will shine near Antares in Scorpius. Some observers in South America and Antarctica might even see the moon briefly cover Antares during an occultation.

Spring Constellations on Display

May offers some lovely views of the spring constellations. If you head outside on a clear night, here’s what to look for.

Leo the Lion dominates the southern sky. His distinctive sickle shape is easy to spot once you know what you’re looking for. The sickle represents his head and mane. It looks like a backwards question mark with the bright star Regulus at the base.

To the east of Leo, you’ll find Virgo. Her brightest star, Spica, is bluish-white. Spica is one of the 20 brightest stars in the sky. Ancient farmers used it to time their planting seasons.

Arcing above these constellations is the famous Big Dipper asterism. It’s part of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. You can use the two stars at the end of the Dipper’s bowl to point towards Polaris, the North Star.

One tip I’ve picked up: follow the curve of the Big Dipper’s handle to “arc to Arcturus.” Arcturus is a brilliant orange star in the constellation Boötes. It’s the fourth brightest star visible from Earth. Then “spike to Spica” by continuing that curve downward.

These celestial signposts have helped navigators and stargazers for thousands of years. There’s something satisfying about learning them yourself.

The Da Vinci Glow Continues

May is still a great month to spot Earthshine on the crescent moon. Scientists call this phenomenon the “Da Vinci Glow” because Leonardo da Vinci was the first to correctly explain it.

When the moon is a thin crescent, look carefully at the dark portion. You might see it faintly glowing. That’s sunlight reflecting off Earth’s clouds and oceans, bouncing to the moon, and then reflecting back to your eyes.

Earthshine is about 10% brighter in April and May than in other months. Nobody is entirely sure why. It might have something to do with cloud patterns over Earth at this time of year.

The best times to see it are a few days before and after the new moon on May 16th. Try looking in the west just after sunset around May 13th to 15th. Or catch the waxing crescent in the evening sky from May 17th to 20th.

You don’t need any equipment. In fact, your naked eyes are better than binoculars for this. The contrast between the bright crescent and the faintly glowing dark limb is easier to appreciate with a wide view.

Practical Tips for May Stargazing

May brings some lovely conditions for spending time under the stars. Here are a few tips I’ve gathered.

First, the new moon on May 16th offers the darkest skies of the month. That’s the best time for hunting faint objects like galaxies and nebulae. The week around the new moon is prime time for deep sky observation.

Second, the evenings are warming up in the Northern Hemisphere. But temperatures can still drop significantly after dark. Bring a jacket or blanket, even if the daytime was warm.

Third, mosquitoes and other insects become more active in May. Depending on where you live, bug spray might be essential. Nothing ruins a stargazing session faster than being eaten alive.

Fourth, spring often brings variable weather. Cloud cover can change quickly. Check the forecast before heading out. Clear skies are obviously essential.

Finally, give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to fully adapt to the dark. Avoid looking at your phone screen during this time. If you need light, use a red-tinted torch. Red light affects your night vision far less than white light.

Looking Ahead to June

May sets up some exciting things for next month. Venus and Jupiter are drawing closer together in the evening sky. By June 9th, they’ll appear just 1.5 degrees apart in a stunning conjunction.

That’s going to be one of the most beautiful sights of the entire year. No telescope needed. Just walk outside after sunset and look west. The two brightest planets will appear almost like a double star.

But for now, enjoy May. Two full moons. Meteor debris from humanity’s most famous comet. An asteroid visible to the naked eye. And warm evenings are perfect for simply looking up.

The universe keeps putting on a show. All we have to do is step outside and watch.
