Why Thanksgiving Skies Drew Me Back Outside

After exploring the Christmas and Easter skies, I realised I was missing autumn completely. Thanksgiving arrives right when fall transitions into early winter. The sky starts looking different in the summer, but winter constellations haven’t fully taken over yet.

November also brings early darkness, which is actually perfect for stargazing. You don’t have to stay up late to see anything. Right after dinner, the sky is already dark and ready.

Plus, Thanksgiving often involves travel to family homes in different locations. This gives you chances to see the sky from darker rural areas. City dwellers, in particular, benefit from visits to the countryside during the holiday.

I started wondering what autumn skies could offer. Turns out, quite a lot. The stars visible at Thanksgiving are completely different from spring or summer. Let me share what I discovered about Turkey Day stargazing.

The Great Square of Pegasus: Your Autumn Landmark

The Great Square of Pegasus dominates the autumn sky. It’s exactly what it sounds like: four bright stars forming a large square. This pattern is your roadmap to everything else in the fall sky.

Around Thanksgiving, the Great Square appears high in the southern sky after sunset. It’s huge, covering an area roughly the size of your fist held at arm’s length. Consequently, it’s hard to miss once someone points it out.

Here’s something I found interesting. The square looks empty inside. On dark nights, you can count how many stars you see within the square. This serves as a measure of your sky’s darkness and visibility.

Three corners of the square belong to Pegasus, the winged horse. However, the northeastern corner actually belongs to Andromeda. Constellations sometimes share stars, which confused me at first.

Andromeda Galaxy: Your First Deep Sky Object

This is the big one for me. The Andromeda Galaxy is the most distant object visible to the naked eye. It’s 2.5 million light-years away. That means the light you’re seeing left Andromeda when our ancestors were early humans.

From dark locations, Andromeda appears as a fuzzy oval patch. It’s not dramatically obvious like planets or bright stars. However, once you see it, you’ll never forget what you’re looking at.

To find it, start at the Great Square of Pegasus. Follow the chain of stars extending from the square’s northeastern corner. The second bright star in that chain is called Mirach. Look just above Mirach, and you’ll see the fuzzy patch.

Binoculars transform Andromeda completely. Suddenly, you can see the galaxy’s elongated shape clearly. You’re looking at 200 billion stars compressed into that small fuzzy spot. It’s mind-blowing.

Around Thanksgiving, Andromeda is perfectly positioned overhead in the evening. You don’t need a telescope. Just dark skies and patience. EarthSky has detailed finding charts that really help beginners.

Cassiopeia: The Queen’s W

Cassiopeia looks like a sideways W or M, depending on its orientation. Five bright stars form this distinctive pattern. It’s one of the easiest constellations to recognise once you see it.

Around Thanksgiving, Cassiopeia appears in the northeastern sky in the evening. Later at night, it moves nearly overhead. The constellation never sets for viewers in northern locations because it’s circumpolar.

In Greek mythology, Cassiopeia was a vain queen who boasted about her beauty. She’s chained to her throne, circling the North Star eternally. Different cultures see different patterns in these same stars, though.

Cassiopeia sits right in the Milky Way, which makes it extra interesting. On dark nights, you can see the cloudy band of our galaxy running through the constellation. This area is rich with star clusters.

Moreover, Cassiopeia helps you find the North Star. Draw a line from Cassiopeia through the Big Dipper and you’ll hit Polaris. Therefore, learning this constellation improves your sky navigation skills.

The Pleiades: Still Shining Bright

I mentioned the Pleiades during Christmas stargazing, but they’re actually visible from autumn through spring. Around Thanksgiving, they rise in the eastern sky in the evening.

This little star cluster never gets old for me. The tight grouping of blue-white stars looks magical. Most people see six or seven stars without optical aid. Binoculars reveal dozens more.

The Pleiades are sometimes called the Seven Sisters from Greek mythology. However, cultures worldwide have stories about this cluster. Some see dancing maidens, others see a group of seeds or a bird’s nest.

Around Thanksgiving, the Pleiades serve as a sign that winter constellations are approaching. They rise ahead of Orion and the winter stars. Consequently, seeing them reminds me that the sky is changing seasons.

The cluster appears in the constellation Taurus. It’s about 440 light-years away and contains over 1,000 stars total. The brightest ones are young, hot, and blue.

Jupiter or Saturn: Thanksgiving Planets

Which planets are visible at Thanksgiving varies by year. However, November often features Jupiter or Saturn prominently. Sometimes, both appear in the evening sky together.

Jupiter is unmistakable when visible because it’s so bright. Only Venus outshines it among planets. Jupiter appears as a brilliant white “star” that doesn’t twinkle. Through binoculars, you can see its four largest moons lined up.

Saturn appears more yellowish and dimmer than Jupiter. However, it’s still brighter than most stars. Small telescopes reveal Saturn’s magnificent rings. Even 30x magnification shows them clearly.

Consequently, I always verify what’s actually visible before planning a Thanksgiving stargazing session. Don’t rely on old information. The sky changes constantly as planets orbit the Sun.

Taurus the Bull: Charging Into View

Taurus rises in the east during Thanksgiving evenings. The constellation represents a bull from Greek mythology. Its most distinctive feature is the V-shaped cluster of stars forming the bull’s face.

This V-shaped cluster is called the Hyades. It’s another star cluster, though more spread out than the Pleiades. The Hyades are closer to us, only about 150 light-years away.

The brightest star in Taurus is Aldebaran, which marks the bull’s eye. Aldebaran appears orange-red and stands out from the other stars in the Hyades. Actually, Aldebaran isn’t part of the cluster itself. It just happens to lie in the same direction.

The Pleiades sit on the bull’s shoulder, completing the constellation. Two long horns extend from the V-shaped face. One horn points toward Orion, which rises later in the evening.

Around Thanksgiving, Taurus is perfectly positioned for after-dinner viewing. Look toward the east, and you can’t miss it. The constellation climbs higher throughout the night.

The Northern Taurid Meteor Shower: Autumn Fireballs

The Northern Taurid meteor shower peaks in mid-November, often right around Thanksgiving. This shower is special because it produces bright fireballs rather than numerous faint meteors.

You might only see five meteors per hour during Taurids. However, they tend to be spectacular when they appear. Bright, slow-moving fireballs that leave persistent trails. These are genuinely impressive to watch.

The meteors appear to radiate from Taurus, hence the name. However, like all meteor showers, they can appear anywhere in the sky. You don’t need to look specifically at Taurus.

The best time to view is after midnight, when Taurus is high overhead. However, you can see the Taurids any time after the constellation rises. Find a dark spot, lie back, and be patient.

Additionally, Taurid meteors are caused by debris from Comet Encke. Earth passes through this debris stream twice yearly. We get the Southern Taurids in early November and the Northern Taurids later in the month.

American Meteor Society tracks meteor shower activity worldwide. They provide forecasts and let you report sightings. Contributed observations help scientists study these showers more effectively.

Perseus: The Hero Rising

Perseus starts becoming visible in the northeastern sky around Thanksgiving. This constellation represents the Greek hero who slew Medusa. By midnight, Perseus appears well above the horizon.

The constellation contains the famous variable star Algol. Algol represents Medusa’s eye and changes brightness every few days. Ancient astronomers called it the “Demon Star” because of this eerie behaviour.

Actually, Algol isn’t truly variable in the traditional sense. It’s an eclipsing binary system where two stars orbit each other. When one passes in front of the other, the brightness dims noticeably.

Perseus also contains the Double Cluster, which is spectacular through binoculars. Two open star clusters appear close together in space. They’re both young clusters filled with hot blue stars.

Around Thanksgiving, Perseus rises in the evening and reachesa good viewing height by late night. The constellation sits right in the Milky Way like Cassiopeia. Therefore, this area appears rich with stars on dark nights.

Auriga: The Charioteer

Auriga sits next to Perseus in the northeastern sky. Its brightest star is Capella, which is actually the sixth-brightest star in our entire sky. Capella appears yellowish-white and shines brilliantly.

The constellation supposedly represents a charioteer, though the pattern doesn’t obviously resemble one. The main stars form a pentagon shape. Capella sits at one corner of this pentagon.

Interestingly, Capella is actually four stars in two binary pairs. They’re so close together that they appear as one star to our eyes. Only powerful telescopes can separate them.

Auriga contains several nice star clusters visible through binoculars. These clusters lie along the Milky Way, which runs through the constellation. Consequently, scanning this area reveals many beautiful star fields.

Around Thanksgiving, Auriga rises in the northeast in the evening. By midnight, it’s well-placed for viewing. Capella serves as an excellent beacon for finding your way around the autumn sky.

The Moon at Thanksgiving: Harvest Connections

Thanksgiving doesn’t have a fixed lunar connection like Easter does. The holiday falls on the fourth Thursday of November regardless of the moon phase. Therefore, the Moon might be full, new, or anything in between.

However, November sometimes features the Beaver Moon, the traditional name for its full moon. Various cultures named the moons after seasonal activities. November marked the beaver trapping season in some traditions.

Check what phase the Moon will be during Thanksgiving this year. A crescent or new moon means darker skies for seeing faint objects. Meanwhile, a full or gibbous moon brightens the sky considerably.

Bright moonlight washes out fainter stars and the Milky Way. However, it makes lunar observing spectacular. Craters and mountain ranges show incredible detail through binoculars during any phase except full moon.

Orion Rising: Winter’s Preview

By late evening on Thanksgiving, Orion starts rising in the eastern sky. This gives you a preview of winter’s main constellation. Orion won’t reach good viewing height until after midnight, though.

Seeing Orion rise reminds me that seasons are changing. The winter stars are coming back. Soon, Orion will dominate the evening sky as it did around Christmas.

Consequently, Thanksgiving skies offer variety. Early evening shows autumn constellations like Pegasus and Andromeda. Later at night, winter constellations like Orion start appearing. You get both seasons in one night.

This transition period makes November particularly interesting for stargazers. The sky is literally changing before your eyes throughout the season.

November weather can be unpredictable depending on where you live. Some regions get cold early, others remain mild. Check local forecasts before planning outdoor stargazing sessions.

Thanksgiving often involves travel to family homes. Bring binoculars if you have them. Rural locations usually offer darker skies than your home city. Take advantage of better viewing conditions.

After a big Thanksgiving dinner, stargazing provides a pleasant activity and exercise. It gets everyone outside moving around. Plus, the food coma means you’ll want to lie down anyway. Perfect for watching meteors.

Kids especially enjoy searching for the Great Square or hunting for the Pleiades. Make it a family tradition after dinner. Everyone can participate regardless of their astronomy knowledge.

Additionally, November’s early darkness means you don’t need to stay up late. Decent viewing starts around 7 or 8 PM in most locations. Consequently, even young children can participate.

Shield your eyes from direct light sources using your hands or a jacket. This helps preserve night vision even when lights are nearby. Small improvements make surprising differences.

The same astronomy apps work year-round and update automatically to the current date. SkySafari, Stellarium, and Star Walk 2 all show you exactly what’s visible on Thanksgiving night.

I still recommend checking apps before going outside rather than during stargazing. Phone screens destroy your night vision instantly. Memorise what you want to find, then put the phone away.

Astronomy.com publishes excellent monthly guides with printable star charts. These are particularly helpful in November, when you’re away from your home computers.

NASA’s website features monthly skywatching guides that cover highlights. They’re beginner-friendly and only take a few minutes to watch. Great for planning what to look for.
